Nancy Hart 1735-1830
- Born in North Carolina
- Hart had many family ties to striking figures in early american history,her cousin was the Revolutionary General Daniel Morgan
- Although her was illiterate, she was gifted with the skills and necessary knowledge for a frontier survivor(hunting ,herbalist)
- During times of battle, Hart would unleash great wrath upon the British Loyalists
- She would often disguise herself as a man to gather information from opposing sides; which she would pass to her brother patriots.
- Took active part during the Battle of Kettle Creek on Feb 14, 1779
- One of her most famous stories was when six men demanded information about a particular person. When Hart refused to speak about the matter the men killed then order her to cook her prized turkey. When the men asked for drinks Hart happily opened her jugs of wine to the men. Once she knew that they were well intoxicated she sent her daughter to alert the neighbors that there were tories in her cabin. The tories began to notice what was happening so they hastily jumped up,but as soon as they did she threatened to shoot them if they tried to run.In the end Hart ended up shooting one and the others were hung by a near by tree.
- Hart continued to live Broad River settlment years after the war.
- By then she found religion through the Methodists
- Sources say that she fought the devil just as hard as she once fought the tories.
- Shortly after Harts husband died in the 1790s; Nancy moved in with her son until her death in 1830.
